A 5,000mg tincture sits confidently above its 1,000mg counterpart, priced accordingly, marketed as the serious option for serious consumers. The implicit message is straightforward: more CBD, more benefit.

The actual science is considerably less cooperative.

A growing pattern in consumer reporting, combined with what pharmacologists understand about cannabidiol's behavior in the human body, suggests that the relentless pursuit of higher milligram counts may be one of the most effective ways to spend more money and achieve less. Understanding why requires a brief but important detour into how CBD is absorbed in the first place.

The Absorption Problem Nobody Talks About

CBD is not particularly easy for the human body to process. Regardless of the delivery format — oil, capsule, gummy, or softgel — a substantial portion of any ingested dose never reaches systemic circulation at all. This is the concept of bioavailability, and for oral CBD products, it is genuinely modest.

Estimates from pharmacokinetic research place oral CBD bioavailability somewhere between 6% and 19%, depending on whether the product is taken with food, how it is formulated, and individual metabolic variation. Sublingual administration — holding oil under the tongue — performs somewhat better, but the improvement is incremental rather than transformative.

What this means in practical terms is that a consumer taking 100mg of CBD orally may be delivering somewhere between 6mg and 19mg to their bloodstream. A consumer taking 500mg of the same product is not delivering five times as much effective CBD — they are delivering five times as much to a system that has a finite capacity to process and utilize what arrives.

This is where the concept of a pharmacokinetic ceiling becomes relevant.

Diminishing Returns and the Saturation Threshold

The human endocannabinoid system does not operate like a fuel tank that fills proportionally with each additional dose. Receptors can become saturated. Metabolic enzymes — particularly CYP3A4 and CYP2C19 in the liver — have throughput limits. Beyond certain dose ranges, additional CBD contributes progressively less to the physiological response consumers are seeking, while the cost per serving continues to climb.

Research published in peer-reviewed pharmacology literature has consistently demonstrated that CBD's dose-response relationship follows what scientists call an inverted U-curve in some contexts — meaning that beyond an optimal range, increasing the dose can actually reduce effectiveness for certain outcomes. This is not unique to CBD; many compounds that interact with receptor systems exhibit similar patterns.

For the average consumer purchasing a high-potency product expecting linear improvement, this pharmacological reality is an unwelcome surprise. The body has already reached its processing capacity. The excess is metabolized and excreted. The wallet is lighter. The results are not meaningfully better — and may, in some cases, be measurably worse.

How the Industry Got Here

Understanding the potency arms race requires acknowledging the commercial incentives that drove it. As the CBD market expanded rapidly through the late 2010s and into the 2020s, brands competing for consumer attention discovered that milligram counts were an easy shorthand for perceived value. Consumers with no framework for evaluating CBD quality defaulted to the most legible metric available: the number on the label.

Manufacturers responded accordingly. Products that once topped out at 500mg or 1,000mg gave way to 2,500mg, 5,000mg, and eventually products marketed at 10,000mg or beyond. Each escalation reset consumer expectations about what constituted a legitimate, potent product — and rendered moderate-potency options psychologically inferior in the retail environment, regardless of how they actually performed.

This dynamic created a feedback loop. Consumers who purchased high-potency products and experienced disappointing results rarely blamed the milligram count. They blamed the brand, the batch, or their own biology. They then sought out an even higher-potency product from a different company, perpetuating the cycle.

Meanwhile, consumers using moderate-potency products — often those who had done more research, worked with a knowledgeable retailer, or arrived at their dose through careful titration — frequently reported more consistent results. Not because their products were chemically superior, but because their dose was operating closer to the physiologically productive range for their individual absorption characteristics.

What Moderate-Potency Users Understand Implicitly

There is a meaningful difference between a consumer who uses a 750mg tincture and takes 1ml per day, and a consumer who uses a 3,000mg tincture and takes the same volume. The second consumer is ingesting four times the CBD per serving. But if both consumers have similar bioavailability profiles and similar receptor saturation thresholds, the additional CBD in the high-potency product is not being converted into additional benefit — it is being processed and eliminated.

The moderate-potency user, often without realizing it, has landed closer to an effective dose range. Their product is not doing less work; it may be doing the same work at a fraction of the cost per serving.

This does not mean high-potency products are universally inappropriate. There are legitimate use cases — individuals with specific health conditions, those who have methodically titrated upward under medical guidance, or consumers with documented absorption challenges who require higher doses to achieve the same systemic exposure. But these are specific circumstances, not the general case that high-potency marketing implies.

A Framework for Evaluating What You Actually Need

For consumers trying to make more rational purchasing decisions in an environment saturated with potency marketing, a few principles are worth internalizing.

Start with the lowest effective dose, not the highest available. Pharmacological best practice for any compound that interacts with receptor systems involves titrating upward from a modest baseline. Beginning with a high-potency product eliminates the ability to identify the dose at which you achieve the response you are seeking.

Calculate cost per milligram, not cost per bottle. A $120 bottle containing 3,000mg of CBD costs $0.04 per milligram. A $40 bottle containing 1,000mg of CBD costs the same. The premium pricing of high-potency products frequently does not reflect a proportional increase in value — it reflects the marketing premium attached to large numbers.

Recognize that bioavailability is the variable, not just dose. A better-formulated moderate-potency product — one using a lipid-based carrier that improves absorption, or a nano-emulsified formula with genuinely improved bioavailability data — may deliver more effective CBD to your system than a poorly formulated high-potency competitor. Milligrams on the label and milligrams in your bloodstream are not the same figure.

Consult a healthcare provider before escalating doses. This is particularly important for consumers using CBD alongside prescription medications, where drug interaction risk scales with dose. The assumption that more CBD is simply more beneficial, with no downside, is not supported by the available evidence.

The Honest Assessment

The CBD industry's potency escalation has served manufacturers and retailers far more reliably than it has served consumers. High milligram counts are a compelling retail signal that drives purchasing decisions — but they are a poor proxy for the outcomes consumers are actually seeking.

The pharmacokinetics of CBD absorption impose real limits on how much of any dose reaches the systems it is intended to influence. Those limits do not scale with the number on the label. Consumers who internalize this reality and approach CBD dosing with the same methodical patience they would apply to any other supplement are, on the evidence, more likely to find a dose that works — and less likely to spend their way through a progression of increasingly expensive disappointments.

Higher is not better. Effective is better. Those are not always the same thing.
